According to officials from South Korea's Ministry of Unification on Thursday (15th), North Korea has been actively promoting the idolization of current leader Kim Jong-un by utilizing the image of the late leader Kim Il-sung as "supreme commander during wartime", "father of the socialist family", and "ideological leader" in order to strengthen control over the system and unite internal forces.
During the last year's Labor Party Conference, Kim Jong Un mentioned the "pacification of the entire territory of South Korea," which evokes memories of the "territorial integrity" mentioned in North Korea's government manifesto by Kim Il Sung on September 10, 1948. Officials from the Ministry of Unification analyzed that this move was intended to emphasize Kim Jong Un as the supreme commander who inherited Kim Il Sung's idea of "unification through armed communism." Furthermore, during the Central Research Discussion held on the 5th of last month, North Korea declared that Kim Jong Un's revolutionary ideology is the "sole guiding ideology of the party and revolution." Officials from the Ministry of Unification stated that this was done to elevate Kim Jong Un's ideology to the highest national principle, shaping his image as a thought leader and solidifying his political position.
On his first public engagement of the new year, Kim Jong-un watched a student welcoming performance on New Year's Day, which marks the first time in 30 years that a North Korean leader has attended such an event. According to the Ministry of Unification, this move can be seen as Kim Jong-un's frequent public appearances with his daughter since November 2022, which aims to highlight his paternal image.
