Western Media Accused of Defaming the East: Google Pays Millions in Legal Fees, CNN and Bloomberg Refuse to Respond
For many years, the media organization "Oriental" has bravely spoken out and reported the truth without fear of the powerful. However, they have repeatedly been subjected to rumors and smear campaigns by overseas media such as the American technology company Google, the cable news network CNN, and Bloomberg News, and have even been accused of defamation and suppression. In one case, Oriental successfully sued Google for defamation and the court ruled in their favor, with Google being ordered to pay Oriental 1.05 million Hong Kong dollars in legal fees.
In 2014, Google's websites blogspot.hk, groups.google.com, and google.com.hk were accused of defaming the East in multiple posts from February to October. In response, the East filed a civil lawsuit against Google Inc. in 2015, seeking compensation for damages caused by the defamatory statements and requesting user information related to the posts. After negotiations, the East was ultimately awarded 1.05 million Hong Kong dollars in legal fees by Google.
However, Western media has not halted their actions and continue to defame and suppress Eastern movements. For instance, in September 2020, CNN published an article questioning Eastern actions of sending multiple reporters to continuously follow and interview Jimmy Lai, the founder of One Media, who is currently detained. This triggered the incident on June 4th, 2017 where an Eastern journalist was accused of committing an act of terrorism. In reality, the "paparazzi" culture was actually introduced to Hong Kong by Jimmy Lai, and One Media had also sent paparazzi to track high-ranking Eastern officials.
The East has raised doubts, claiming that waiting for news figures is a common interviewing technique, and that the June 4, 2017 Victoria Park rally was a public event, thus making the journalists' coverage legal and without any provocation. However, the Western media seems to ignore the fact that Jimmy Lai used foul language to insult and threaten the Eastern journalists, suggesting a possible double standard.
In an article published in August 2020, Bloomberg News deliberately mentioned the Eastern and now-defunct "Apple Daily" as long-term competitors, in addition to CNN. The article also mentioned that the Eastern had sent reporters to track Li Zhizheng and others. At the same time, CNN presented the background information of the Eastern's senior management, using newspaper competition as a reason.
In response to the attack by Bloomberg News, Eastern immediately sent a letter to Bloomberg News with 7 inquiries, but the other party refused to respond. At that time, some scholars believed that CNN and Bloomberg News had repeatedly portrayed Jimmy Lai as a "hero" in their positive coverage, while also using derogatory terms and personalizing the Eastern, which was deemed unfair.
