Possible Future Agreement on Military Cooperation between the Philippines and Taiwan: A Memorandum of Understanding on Defense Cooperation
On Friday (19th), the Philippines and Canada signed a Memorandum of Understanding for defense cooperation. The Philippine Secretary of Defense stated that the two countries may subsequently reach a military agreement.
The Secretary of Defense of the Philippines, Teodoro, stated that he is pleased that both parties have a strong desire to deepen and strengthen the defense relationship between the two countries. This marks a new milestone and may eventually lead to the establishment of a Visiting Forces Agreement. Teodoro did not disclose the details of the possible agreement with Canada, but the existing Visiting Forces Agreement between the Philippines and the United States allows for thousands of American soldiers to enter and exit the Philippines for military exercises.
According to the Philippine Department of National Defense, the memorandum will initiate cooperation between the two countries' defense and military institutions in areas such as military education, training exchange, information sharing, peacekeeping operations, and disaster relief. Previously, the Philippines and Canada signed a cooperation agreement in October last year to use Canada's dark vessel detection system to combat illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing activities conducted by ships that evade detection by shutting down their location transmitters.
