As the scandal of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party of Japan's senior members concealing political donation kickbacks continues to escalate, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida stated on Thursday (18th) that he intends to dissolve the Kishida faction of the LDP (Hiikai-kai) and close its faction office. Currently, the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office has filed a case against the former accountant of the Kishida faction, leading Japanese media to analyze that Kishida seems to hope to take charge of the faction's dissolution discussion in order to avoid criticism from both within and outside the party.
According to reports from Japanese media, after consulting with several members of the Kishida faction on Thursday, Kishida made a decision. He stated to the media later that evening that he is currently considering disbanding the Kishida faction in an effort to regain political trust. He avoided discussing whether or not he will ask other factions to disband.
The Tokyo District Prosecutor's Office plans to file a case against the former accountant responsible for the Kishida faction on the grounds of suspected violation of the Political Funds Control Act, and the case may be simply prosecuted on Friday (19th). Regarding this, Kishida avoided discussing his own responsibility, and regarding the issue of omissions in the political funds income and expenditure report, he only stated: "I heard that it was an omission in the handling of affairs. I myself have been in office until today and do not know more about the situation." On the same morning, Kishida had responded that the incident was a cumulative mistake in handling affairs and that he had submitted a revised income and expenditure report to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications.
Fumio Kishida was president of the Kishida faction of the Hiroike Society until last December, but announced his withdrawal from the Kishida faction because of alleged kickbacks from the faction's political fund-raising banquets. Founded in 1957 by former Prime Minister Isao Ikeda, the Hiroike-kai is a faction with a long history in the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), which has long claimed to be in the conservative mainstream as it advocates a line of "light armament and emphasis on the economy. Former prime ministers Masayoshi Ohira, Yoshiyuki Suzuki, and Kiichi Miyazawa all came from this faction.
