One Death Resulting from Attack by 2 Masked Gunmen on an Istanbul Church
The Catholic Church of Our Lady was attacked.
On Sunday (28th), two masked gunmen in Istanbul opened fire and killed one person during a Sunday Mass in a church. Authorities are currently pursuing the suspects. The Islamic extremist group "Islamic State" (IS) claimed on social media that two of their members carried out the attack and stated that the two have safely fled the scene.
The Turkish Minister of the Interior, Yellickaya, denounced the attack, stating that it occurred at 8:40 Greenwich Mean Time in the Italian Santa Maria Catholic Church located in the Salleyel district.
According to Yerlikaya, on a social network, the first letters of the victim's name were written as follows: "Among the crowd attending the service, C.T. was unfortunately targeted by two masked gunmen and died." It is common for Turkish officials not to disclose the full names of victims or perpetrators in attack incidents.
It is still unclear what caused the victim to be targeted. Video from the church shows multiple police cars and an ambulance outside the building.
