Meeting in Seoul between Representatives of South Korea, United States, and Japan to Discuss Strategies for Dealing with North Korea
Against the backdrop of rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula, on Thursday (18th), the Minister of the Korean Peninsula Peace Negotiations at the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kim Geon, held talks in Seoul with Park Jung, the US State Department's representative for North Korea, and Tadashi, Director of the Asia and Oceania Bureau at the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to discuss a joint plan of action.
During his opening statement, Jin Jian emphasized that South Korea, the United States, and Japan have consistently worked towards building a sustainable and prosperous Korean Peninsula, while North Korea has always acted independently. He questioned North Korea's motives for creating tension in order to maintain stability within their country, including their announcement to abolish a joint organization with South Korea and shifting the blame onto the US and South Korea for their version of isolationist policies. Park Jung also expressed concern over North Korea's recent increase in hostile actions towards South Korea, which has caused worry among American officials.
Regarding North Korea's provision of ballistic missiles to Russia, the NBO reiterated the need for attention. According to South Korean news agency Yonhap, the talks between South Korea, the United States, and Japan also discussed substantive measures to cut off North Korea's nuclear and missile funding through illegal cyber activities and maritime transportation.
